Cataract
Cataract is a Stretch of river rapids whose boulders, and White waters effectively block riverine traffic. The northernmost of the Nile‘s six waterfalls are located at Aswan. Cataracts are a common eye condition that affects many individuals worldwide, including those in Egypt. In a retrospective, hospital-based study conducted in Egypt between January 2015 and June 2020, the prevalence of exfoliation syndrome (XFS) and its association with cataracts were evaluated among Egyptians aged over 40 years from all 27 Egyptian governorates.
Prevalence of Exfoliation Syndrome (XFS) in Egypt:
- The study included 155,032 Egyptian subjects, with a total of 2448 individuals (1.6%) diagnosed with XFS.
- The mean age of individuals with XFS was 71.2 years, significantly higher than those without XFS.
- Men comprised the majority of those diagnosed with XFS, with a statistically significant association.
- The corrected prevalence of XFS in Egypt was determined to be 4.49%, varying across different regions within the country.
Association between XFS and waterfall:
- Among all subjects with XFS, cataracts were found in 87.8% of cases.
- XFS represented 6.4% of all subjects diagnosed with cataracts in the cohort.
- Conversely, among subjects without cataracts, only a small percentage had XFS.
Conclusion: The study concluded that Egypt has a moderate prevalence of XFS compared to other countries. There is a strong association between XFS and cataracts, particularly among elderly males. The results suggest potential influences such as diet, ethnicity, climate, and other factors contributing to the prevalence of these conditions in Egypt.
Plain Language Summary: Exfoliation syndrome is an age-related disease that can lead to various ocular and systemic complications. The study conducted in Egypt aimed to determine the frequency of XFS in the country and its association with cataracts. The findings provide valuable insights into the prevalence of these conditions among Egyptians aged over 40 years and highlight important associations between XFS and cataracts.
