History of Heliopolis
Heliopolis, also known as Iunu in ancient Egyptian, was a major city of ancient Egypt and a significant religious center. It served as the capital of the 13th or Heliopolite Nome of Lower Egypt.
The city’s native name was Iwnw, meaning “The Pillars,” and it was later known as the “City of the Sun” due to its association with the sun god Ra. The city saw a decline in Ra’s cult during Dynasty V, leading to the development of the Ennead, a group of nine major Egyptian deities. In later periods, such as during the Amarna Period of Dynasty 18, Pharaoh Akhenaten introduced henotheistic worship of Aten, another form of solar deity. Heliopolis also housed the cult of the Mnevis bull, representing the Sun.
Significance of the Old City
Heliopolis was occupied since prehistoric times and greatly expanded during the Old and Middle Kingdoms. During ancient times, Heliopolis was primarily known for being the cult center of the sun god Atum, who later became identified with Ra and Horus. The main temple in the city was called the Great House or House of Atum, where priests worshipped Atum or Ra as the first being created from the primeval waters.
Architectural Marvels
The city is mentioned in biblical texts as well. During Hellenistic times, Heliopolis flourished as a center of learning and philosophy. Greek philosophers like Orpheus, Homer, Pythagoras, Plato, and others were said to have frequented its schools. However, with Roman rule in Egypt, particularly under Ptolemaic reign, interest shifted away from Heliopolis towards other cults like Serapis in Alexandria.

The town featured luxurious amenities and infrastructure aimed at different social classes. Overall, it has a rich history dating back to ancient Egyptian times when it was a prominent religious center dedicated to solar deities like Ra and Atum.
Decline and Legacy
In Roman Egypt, Heliopolis belonged to Augustamnica province and many obelisks from the city were taken to adorn cities like Rome and London. Today, little remains of ancient Heliopolis except for some monuments like an obelisk erected by Senusret I. Modern-day It was established in 1905 near Cairo by Édouard Empain and Boghos Nubar. It was designed as a garden city with unique architecture known as the Heliopolis style.
