Ancient Egyptian sphinxes represented the king with the body of a lion, in a clear demonstration of his power Giza Pyramids, are two of the most well-known tourist attractions in the world, and they have been since the Old Kingdom Egypt. A king from the fourth dynasty was buried in each of these magnificent buildings (c.2613–2494 BC).
King Khufu (c. 2589–2566 BC) had the Great Pyramid of Giza constructed for him, and the other two were for his son Khafre and grandson Menkaure. The first structure to reach a height greater than Khufu’s pyramid would not be constructed for another 3,800 years! Built in the early 26th century BC during around 27 years, the pyramid is the oldest of the ancient world wonders, initially standing at 146.6 meters. The Great Pyramid was built by quarrying an estimated 2.3 million large blocks weighing 6 million tonnes in total. The majority of stones are not uniform in size or shape and are only roughly dressed.
